I do not like Japanese style Valentine’s Day because I have to wait for someone giving me a chocolate!!!!!! If someone gives me something (even ギリチョコ), I will be very happy. However, I will feel blue if I could not get anything. haha
I usually got chocolate from my mother and sister. How pity it is... (Thank you my mom and sister). My middle high school did not allow to bring food from outside, so I could not even get ギリチョコ until high school!!! but in the other hand, I might be lucky. I did not have to think about the return to anyone when it is White Day!!
In the White Day, I usually give cookies to the girls who gave me something. It is easy to make and I can make a lot.
I like more American style Valentin's Day than Japanese style. I feel Japanese style is more related to chocolate business. In contrast, in US, I can give any kinds of gifts (flower, accessory, sweets, and so on) to anyone who I like. Also exchange is fun too.

Thanks for sharing Japanese guy's perspective on the V-Day. Have you ever got any ほんめいチョコ?
ReplyDeleteSure, you're right about the chocolate business in Japan but I think it is the same in the US as well... like V-Day sales are everywhere. It is very commercialized like Japan's V-day!
Your perspective on Japanese's Valentines Day is very funny and interesting. I never would have guess that some guys would get anxious to receive chocolate. That's pretty cool though. It's also very cool that you actually make your own cookies, instead of buying them at the store. Most guys I know would just buy them.
ReplyDeleteYeah I like that on Valentine's Day in the US you can give almost any gift rather than only chocolate. It is a sad day for single people, yes! Whether you're a guy or a girl, I think most people feel anxious about receiving gifts unless they have a significant other. Even if they do I'd bet some circles of friends pay attention to which friends exchanged gifts and who didn't get any, etc.
ReplyDeleteI like your thoughts tsubasa. I think you should probably bake some White day cookies for our class on White day.
ReplyDeleteI would feel the same way! American Valentine's Day can be stressful enough, but knowing that girls are the ones giving gifts would make the sitting around hoping for chocolate pretty stressful. I can also see why you'd want to have a little wider range of gift options, instead of tying the holiday so closely with the chocolate companies.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I agree with Jodarski-san. =D
Interesting perspective on the chocolate companies, it seems like in Japan the gift to give is chocolate and in America roses are just as acceptable and some times preferred over chocolate. Yes white days cookies would be awesome!!!! just a thought.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little, me and my sister used to receive gifts on Valentine's Day too. Also, I can see how being limited to only giving chocolates and sweets could get old after a while. I know I don't get excited about easter eggs as much as I did as a child.
ReplyDeleteyah i could see how getting only chocolate would be kind of boring. it would suck if you did not get any, but that also happens here. i like that you make your own gifts to give i also made my gift. i think it is alot nicer than just buying something.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your take on this. I have to agree that with the Japanese Valentine's Day waiting around to see if a girl was going to give you something could quickly turn into an anxious and potentially a total let down if you don't get anything. One of the things that I do like about the US V-Day is the mutual exchange, even if it's something small, and that's something great too, you can give whatever you want. Your not just limited to chocolate...but i gave chocolate anyway.
ReplyDeleteYou have an interesting point. I guess if I had grown up in Japan, instead I would be more worried about it too. The American Valentine's Day has a bit less pressure to get something, if you don't have anyone to give it to. Then again, if you DO have someone, of course it's that much more pressure.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad that you didn't have a chance to get anything on your Valentine's Days until High School.
I would think being able to make your own presents would be a lot more fun too. I enjoy cooking, even for something as simple as cookies.
As to the Japanese Valentine's day, I would say that I agree with your view that it's probably connected more to chocolate business at this point. But hey, the holidays are pretty much run by buyer-consumer stuff nowadays anyway.
I can see how it'd be troublesome to try to remember everyone you may have gotten chocolates from, I guess it'd be pretty bad if you accidentally forgot someone! And I agree that the gift-exchange holidays are more fun when everyone's giving and receiving gifts :)
ReplyDeleteDo men ever exchange gifts on either of these holidays or does the new form of same-sex friend gift giving only apply to women?
